Digital-publishing

How Digital Publishing Works

What is simply Digital Publishing?

You may have wondered.

Simply put Digital Publishing is the production and distribution of traditionally printed material such as:

  • Books
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Catalogs etc.

In an electronic form. These electronic documents are commonly referred to or called as ebooks and they can be produced in many popular formats like:

  • ePub,
  • PDF,
  • HTML, or an
  • e-book application.

Even blogs and websites are mostly considered as a form of digital publishing, and because of that we can often hear the saying:

“Every company is a media company nowadays”.

Because instead of companies reaching, informing and searching for its customers as before, on the internet customers primarily look for great companies themselves, to satisfy their needs and cravings through desired products and services. That’s why top-class publications and content are of huge importance and value.

To get a sense of what Digital Publishing really is let’s look at its evolution up to now.

Project Gutenberg (1971) is usually everyone’s first idea into the world of e-books. Founded by Michael Hart it’s considered to be the first digital publication when he digitized the Declaration of Independence. Since Project Gutenberg, similar e-book libraries have been established but this project will forever be known as the original digital publishing library.

The first mover, the champ.

In the 1990s, the personal computer or home computer became more of a reality for a lot of people, so the CD-ROM drive was commonplace in many of these homes and was part of their personal computers. That’s when, as a smart business move, encyclopedias and some magazine publishers began producing their titles on CDs. In addition, some textbooks came with bonus presentations and other supplemental content on their CDs. And then in 1993, introduced by Adobe Corporation, the Portable Document Format or PDF was developed to convert documents to a more universal format.

So the term “Paperless Office” was born. It was a boy/girl.

Around the 1990s the World Wide Web became available for the home user and almost every company incorporated their business or some part of it, on the internet. It’s also during this time that Amazon starts to sell printed books online.

Afterward, similar circumstances unfold:

  • In 2004, Sony introduced the first e-book device
  • In 2004 too, Google announced its plan to digitize books and offer them online
  • The Sony Reader – Sony’s second attempt with an e-reader device, years later
  • In 2007, Amazon released the Kindle which sells out immediately
  • In 2007 Apple release iPhone, which made the possibility for a pocket computer even though it was too small at that time for reading extensively
  • In 2010, Steve Jobs announced the iPad changing the digital publishing world forever. The larger screen made it practical for reading e-books. It was an epiphany for the Digital Publishing world.

Digital Publishing may be new to you, but it has a history of 40 years behind it. However you define it, it’s certainly one of the leading markets of today and it’s shaping our future. Millions of e-book capable devices are in the world and even more, are being sold every day. The push is to fill those devices with amazing content.

And that’s what digital publishing is all about.

“But Simon that’s not how it works, you are telling me history here,” you may think. Don’t worry friend, I got you covered.

At The Books Factory, this process works like a simple machine.

You come with an idea. You may know to write by yourself, but even if you don’t we help you out. Through valuable guidance throughout the whole book process (which by the way we call it “Done For You” publishing), we release and promote your book on its way becoming a bestseller.

How to Publish Your Book

How To Publish Your Book

It’s not 3000 BC.

Flatten and smack the stack of the papyrus plant, add your effort on top of that.

Your smooth & flexible, writing material is born. Accepts and retains ink even without a blur or smudge. Now, revolutionize the literary world.

Wait, WHAT?

We’re not in Ancient Egypt.

Step in this portal (O), to get back in this timeline. Whiup!

This was the way people used to craft the ancient papyrus paper, which was the method on how to write and publish your books. Successfully, the process never stopped evolving.

The development of writing has been a long process that underwent a lot of experimentation and cycles of new methods replacing the old. Different materials dominated distinct regions and eras, and clay was used heavily in the river plains of Mesopotamia. That’s where it is believed writing books was born. Then papyrus dominated the history of written documents”.

Now, you don’t even need paper sheets to publish your book. That being said we don’t have any excuse why not to write and publish nowadays, do we? Then again you wonder how to publish a book. Let’s dive into it more.

1) The form

Even though you can always choose to publish in print and print hard copies (maybe just for the mere fun of it), a recent more popular method is using the huge advantages, that expansion of existing and new technologies bring and move us closer to our goals. These platforms plus the help of a lot of Digital Publishing Agencies (few exceptionally good one), give you an opportunity to publish your book in Ebook format. By making your book digitally available you open the window and access to connect with a global, more engaged audience all across the globe. So these are the 3 ways you can publish your book considering its form:

  • Traditional method with print (hardcopies),
  • eBook Digital Publishing (grants more opportunities)
  • A mix of these two

So what’s the best approach? It depends on an individual basis. Whether you are a traditional fella or a digital skywalker you can choose or mix both approaches. We suggest the eBook publishing as a beneficial and more trendy approach in this context.

2)The way

Do I need to know Kung Fu to understand this? Of course not!

There are two ways to publish here:

  • To self-publish

You can decide to self-publish and do it on your own going for this adventurous route, but beware of dangers! (This is where knowing Martial Arts help).

To avoid being eaten alive by those crocodiles (smileys of crocodiles) we suggest to always reach out for help, when in need. There are a lot of great Digital Publishing agencies and we happen to be one. Jokes aside we love to offer you any help if necessary.

NOO, HUGE blocks of text again! WAIT, this is simple.

Let’s see how Bob the smart author-entrepreneur sees the book publishing process with its benefits down to 3 key elements: Time, Control and Profit.

Time:

Traditional publishing is often time-consuming. From accepting your offer to printing the book, can take away many months, sometimes even years.  But this doesn’t apply for Digital Publishing agencies, where the chosen option is an eBook format. Some of them (including us) let you keep all the profits minimizing costs and even offering the whole writing process for you.

That’s right, you now can be an author without a single written word by yourself.

Control:

Editors may want to change things about your book to make it more marketable. You may not be happy with someone else scribbling your dedicated work, just for the sake of a few more bucks. That’s not the case in all the digital agencies.

If your nose itch when you hear about someone else editing your manuscript, then maybe you have to go another route. You can always reach out for help from a decent Digital Publishing agency. An important key point to note here is the agencies that make YOU the center of their process, not the other way around.

Profit:
While traditional publishing can make your book look even better, covering all the costs surrounding the process of publishing your book, there is a price for that. In the end, the publishing house will keep a cut of the book’s profits. But that’s not always a bad thing nor its always the case.

Sometimes a lot of success is due to their personalized help, and they charge only for the services. That way you get to keep all of your profits to yourself – which is better considering the other options. So better choose wisely.

Finally, when the writing process is eventually complete and you decide to publish, It’s time to celebrate. You are an author, and you deserve a nice celebration.

That’s how to publish a book in the 21st century.

How to Become a Published Author

How to Become a Published Author

No doubt.

There is how to’s for everything.

How to jump from planes. How to scuba-dive.

How to wash your car.

How to sew. How to read, write and prosper…

You can learn almost anything, nowadays. The internet is full of lessons and important tips and insights. No wonder why they called it The Information Age (also called Computer Age, Digital Age, or New Media Age). It’s a historic period of the 21st century characterized from the rapid shift from traditional industry that the Industrial Revolution brought through industrialization, to an economy based on information technology (the use of computers to store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data) – according to Wikipedia.

So how to become a published author in an Informational age, actually it’s opposite of rocket science. We may found that It’s easy. Read on why.

The easiest way to become a published author is by teaming with a Digital Agency to meet your needs. There are a couple of good ones on the internet, which can help you along your way starting from scratch and guiding you through the whole book process – to the bare end or after you publish. You don’t even have to know how to write, nor learn on the internet, and plus you keep all your royalties for yourself. Yes, that’s how we are rolling at The Books Factory.

eBook sales are ramping up since 2010 and almost every book on the planet is out there on the internet in this format. People are reading on their phones, tablets, laptops, and computers. Now, they are carrying a whole library with them, all the time in just one device.

The greatest thing about books being available online is their downward cost – there are no costs for storage, distribution, and physical materials so the sale is only on an informational basis and can be delivered instantly. That’s why thousands of eBooks are available for pennies and for the greater good that allows us as publishers to publish also for smaller audiences, and narrower niches. That’s why we too recommend and choose this route at The Books Factory. It’s win-win for everyone!

Should you self-publish or publish the traditional way?

You can always choose to self-publish too, but keep in mind that there are a lot of bad self-published eBooks that desperately need the helping hand of an editor to sum and clear them up. That’s why we believe you should consider a helping hand when it comes to publishing your book.

Should you choose to self-publish or go the traditional way?

If you are in doubt or wander around this question, you are not alone! Manny writers regardless of their skill level, career path or how established they are, struggle with this too.

Since 2000, times have dramatically changed and now many self-publishing authors accuse traditionally published authors of being short-sighted in their compliance to a “standard” system. But the truth is that there isn’t a single right answer to this question, it depends whether you choose the old traditional way or you want to be up to date with the New Media, and grasp its benefits.

Answering these 3 questions might help you decide:

  1. Do you expect to see your book in the bookstores across the country?

It’s almost impossible for a self-published author, to achieve wide-scale distribution. You may be the lucky one, and be able to get your book locally if you are well connected in your community but for the most part, self-published authors will sell on Amazon as an eBook format. That’s not bad at all because more than half of all the books sold in the United States are through Amazon. Combined with a Digital agency to cover marketing and promotion, it’s one of the most successful tactics you can choose to.

2) Do you want to hit the bestseller status and get media attention?

Whether you seek for the New York Times bestseller list or Amazon bestseller, you’ll need help from a traditional or digital publishing agency. It’s also very challenging to get any major media to pay attention to you as a self-published author.

3) Can your book easily reach your audience?

It’s senseless to partner with a traditional agency if your book’s audience is one that you can reach easily on your own. However, if you’re looking to increase your readership in some way or help you pivot – then a publisher can be of tremendous help.

Don’t use self-publishing as a way to land a traditional deal. Once you self-publish a book, it will be very difficult to garner interest for your book from a traditional publisher or an agent. Some digital publishes may offer you help, but it’s better to let them help you before you even decide to publish.

The success rate for self-publishing is not that different from the traditional. You may end up making more money in both cases. Self-published authors may find that marketing and promotion for their book are much tougher than the writing of their books. So are you committed to producing more work, and market it month after month, year after year?

You may be on your right path then.

So take action and see it for yourself. Go and try the traditional route first, get rejected, try to self-publish. Because it’s very very hard at first to go the other way around successfully. In the end, few authors end up as bestselling superstars. Some authors do very well. And the majority do not make a living from selling books. If you’re not an expert it’s better to ask for help from a Digital Publishing agency.

So:

  • Do you want to hit the bestsellers status on Amazon?
  • Do you expect to see your book sell across the country?
  • Do you believe your book can easily reach mass audiences?

If “yes” is your desired answer to these questions, schedule a free call with us, today. At The Books Factory, we always love to help you publish.

Benefits of Being a Author

Advantages of being a Writer

“Once upon a time, there was a prostitute called Maria.

Wait a minute. ‘Once upon a time’ is how all the best children’s stories begin and ‘prostitute’ is a word for adults. How can I start a book with this apparent contradiction?”

That’s how Paulo Coelho’s book “Eleven minutes” begins.

And we can’t argue, being an author is COOL.

And not only that…

This excerpt is the beginning paragraph taken from the famous Coelho’s bestseller – Eleven Minutes. It shows a creativity an author can foretake to make his idea stick, into readers minds. Make them love his product, remember the author, and spontaneously building the credibility of expertise in our minds. Just as this book did with me – I still remember Eleven Minutes, and its infamous beginning even though I’ve read it more than ten years ago. Unlike hundreds of other read books that didn’t leave me with significant emotion feeling wonderful, nor a pleasant thing that could make them stick into my memories.

Relax, we can learn this too.

Fasten your seatbelt we’re ready to launch!

Even though authoring a book and be on the niche is a big investment in time, effort, and money, in the end, it has a lot of benefits. With the writing, editing, proofreading, design and production work required to publish a book, it can take years before it’s done, and if you can’t write yourself, hiring ghostwriter may cost you a car. The struggle pays off!

Becoming an author is worth it, even when it takes years and costs thousands!

Because writing a book is such a big project, people often dream about doing it but don’t actually get it done because they get stuck along the way. We strive to change that and that’s why at The Books Factory we love to offer any help necessary.

Fun facts:

  • 96% said having a book positively influenced their business;
  • 96% generated more clients;
  • 94% generated more leads;
  • 87% attracted a more desirable client base;

These statistics are from a few years ago, but they’re still pretty fantastic!

1)Spread the word

Writing a book is one of the best ways to share your story and experience with the world. It allows you to reach audiences unlimited by geographic and economic status. There are other ways to do this too, but a book has more tremendous value because it’s an object and extension of oneself.

2)Help Others

Your skills and expertise may seem familiar and usual with yourself since you’re accommodated with them but to others, they may be like a treasury. That’s why it’s a good thing to share them in a book, and help others along the way. Becoming an author allows you to reach and help far more people than you could reach in real person.

3)Become an Expert

You may have heard the saying “your goals aren’t goals until you write them down on paper”. It’s similar to books. Even if you know what you are talking about until you’ve written about it, it’s harder for other people to understand you properly. So just the process of writing a book adds to your expertise a lot!

Becoming an author let others know you’re the expert!

4)Passive Income from Royalties

If we see book writing from the lengths of your income strategy, a book is something you write once and can make money from as long as you keep it in print. Of course, books don’t sell if you don’t market and promote them.

Don’t worry, we can help you with that At The Books Factory.

5)Get Publicity and Media Attention

Getting media attention may be a difficult task, whether is just for trying to share your story or try to get your business mentioned somewhere. A book is like a lead magnet, and a decent benefit of you being an Author.

Journalists are always looking for experts to interview, and that’s your chance to be reviewed in newspapers and magazines too. Any invitations for a radio or television show? With a book, you’ll have for sure!

6)Unexpected Opportunities

Perhaps the best benefit of becoming an author, according to us at The Books Factory! When you become an author, you’ll never know who will read it and what opportunities and coincidences it may unfold. You could be delivering the next TED Talk or even more.

Social Media Platforms: The Best Way to Promote Your Books

Do you have a book and plan to post it on social media? You are making the right choice!

Launching a book using social media makes it easy for your audience or the community to spread the word and let more people know about your book. This way, just by promoting the books on social media platforms alone is more than enough for you to find customers that you didn’t even know existed, or let your customers find YOU.

Using social media is one of the best ways to connect with fellow writers, experts, fans or customers, and industry professionals. This way, you can not only be led to having writing opportunities but also gain friends who give you mutual support.

However, in promoting your books, the general rule is that your social media feed should only contain about 20% to 30% promotional posts to prevent people from unfollowing you. 70% to 80% should be about everyday things like your rants, opinions, even writing struggles and achievements. This is to let people relate to you which is why they follow you.

How to build your email list with your published book

Email lists are a crucial and strategic communication tool in the arsenal of any business, especially for a published author.

When you become a published author, you are put in a unique position of credibility, authority, and expertise. As such any content shared by you comes with an implicit badge of trust and quality. Thus, an email communication with you would be much desirable for the audience. Building an email list is not only useful means of furthering your entrepreneurial and branding agenda, but a great segway for creating a dedicated reader base for your future literary adventures.

How can I publish my own Book?

Writing your book is the easy part. Publishing it is where the real challenge starts.

Many writers make the fatal mistake of confusing to publish a book with printing at this stage. It is fatal because this could be the difference between grand success and dismal failure.

Printing is just about getting your book into a physical and tangible form. At most, it might involve editing and proofreading. Many writers stop with printing and lose out on a golden opportunity.

To Publish Book, on the other hand, is a series of complex and interlinked functions that aim at creating a product that continues to work for the writers and their businesses.

Can you make your book a success by Self publishing?

Can you become a successful writer by self-publishing?

Depends on how you define ‘publishing success’ for your book – what factors are you willing to consider, what outcome you want to achieve and what return on investment you aim for.

The beauty of self-publishing is that it is highly customised – all processes and functions are designed around the needs of specific clients. This gives you the amazing option to define your brand of publishing success, assemble the team to work for it and then truly achieve the outcome.

Harness the power of speaking engagements for your book and your brand

Speaking engagements help the authors to build a promotional platform for their book and business simultaneously. They also provide an opening for creating an in-person impression on the various players in your industry.

As a publishing agency, we consider speaking engagements as a crucial component of both author promotion and brand building endeavors. We encourage and support our authors to find high profile speaking engagements and help them devise strategies to maximise their effectiveness.
