What is simply Digital Publishing?

You may have wondered.

Project Gutenberg (1971) is usually everyone’s first idea into the world of e-books. Founded by Michael Hart it’s considered to be the first digital publication when he digitized the Declaration of Independence. Since Project Gutenberg, similar e-book libraries have been established but this project will forever be known as the original digital publishing library.

In the 1990s, the personal computer or home computer became more of a reality for a lot of people, so the CD-ROM drive was commonplace in many of these homes and was part of their personal computers. That’s when, as a smart business move, encyclopedias and some magazine publishers began producing their titles on CDs. In addition, some textbooks came with bonus presentations and other supplemental content on their CDs. And then in 1993, introduced by Adobe Corporation, the Portable Document Format or PDF was developed to convert documents to a more universal format.

So the term “Paperless Office” was born. It was a boy/girl.

Around the 1990s the World Wide Web became available for the home user and almost every company incorporated their business or some part of it, on the internet. It’s also during this time that Amazon starts to sell printed books online.

Afterward, similar circumstances unfold:

  • In 2004, Sony introduced the first e-book device
  • In 2004 too, Google announced its plan to digitize books and offer them online
  • The Sony Reader – Sony’s second attempt with an e-reader device, years later
  • In 2007, Amazon released the Kindle which sells out immediately
  • In 2007 Apple release iPhone, which made the possibility for a pocket computer even though it was too small at that time for reading extensively
  • In 2010, Steve Jobs announced the iPad changing the digital publishing world forever. The larger screen made it practical for reading e-books. It was an epiphany for the Digital Publishing world.
