How Digital Publishing Works

What is simply Digital Publishing?

You may have wondered.

Simply put Digital Publishing is the production and distribution of traditionally printed material such as:

  • Books
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Catalogs etc.

In an electronic form. These electronic documents are commonly referred to or called as ebooks and they can be produced in many popular formats like:

  • ePub,
  • PDF,
  • HTML, or an
  • e-book application.

Even blogs and websites are mostly considered as a form of digital publishing, and because of that we can often hear the saying:

“Every company is a media company nowadays”.

Because instead of companies reaching, informing and searching for its customers as before, on the internet customers primarily look for great companies themselves, to satisfy their needs and cravings through desired products and services. That’s why top-class publications and content are of huge importance and value.

To get a sense of what Digital Publishing really is let’s look at its evolution up to now.

Project Gutenberg (1971) is usually everyone’s first idea into the world of e-books. Founded by Michael Hart it’s considered to be the first digital publication when he digitized the Declaration of Independence. Since Project Gutenberg, similar e-book libraries have been established but this project will forever be known as the original digital publishing library.

The first mover, the champ.

In the 1990s, the personal computer or home computer became more of a reality for a lot of people, so the CD-ROM drive was commonplace in many of these homes and was part of their personal computers. That’s when, as a smart business move, encyclopedias and some magazine publishers began producing their titles on CDs. In addition, some textbooks came with bonus presentations and other supplemental content on their CDs. And then in 1993, introduced by Adobe Corporation, the Portable Document Format or PDF was developed to convert documents to a more universal format.

So the term “Paperless Office” was born. It was a boy/girl.

Around the 1990s the World Wide Web became available for the home user and almost every company incorporated their business or some part of it, on the internet. It’s also during this time that Amazon starts to sell printed books online.

Afterward, similar circumstances unfold:

  • In 2004, Sony introduced the first e-book device
  • In 2004 too, Google announced its plan to digitize books and offer them online
  • The Sony Reader – Sony’s second attempt with an e-reader device, years later
  • In 2007, Amazon released the Kindle which sells out immediately
  • In 2007 Apple release iPhone, which made the possibility for a pocket computer even though it was too small at that time for reading extensively
  • In 2010, Steve Jobs announced the iPad changing the digital publishing world forever. The larger screen made it practical for reading e-books. It was an epiphany for the Digital Publishing world.

Digital Publishing may be new to you, but it has a history of 40 years behind it. However you define it, it’s certainly one of the leading markets of today and it’s shaping our future. Millions of e-book capable devices are in the world and even more, are being sold every day. The push is to fill those devices with amazing content.

And that’s what digital publishing is all about.

“But Simon that’s not how it works, you are telling me history here,” you may think. Don’t worry friend, I got you covered.

At The Books Factory, this process works like a simple machine.

You come with an idea. You may know to write by yourself, but even if you don’t we help you out. Through valuable guidance throughout the whole book process (which by the way we call it “Done For You” publishing), we release and promote your book on its way becoming a bestseller.

Here’s simply how it works. A 12-step system:

  1. Book’s Mission

Your books need a plan, so we brainstorm with you until your book’s ideas, goals, purpose, intention, and audience are all clear. Then we create an outline, a hook, and a mission for your book.

2) Book Writing

Your dedicated Angel Writer will interview you for each chapter until the best of what you have to say is turned into text with a tone and style that reflects your message, personality, and brand.

3) Book Editing

Our book editor will ensure that everything is error-free, well-organized, and flowing smoothly. Then they’ll revise it to include your requested changed, creating something that you can be truly proud of.

4)eBook Formatting

We format your book to look great on all eBook readers, converting the text and images into an attractive, easy-to-read layout that keeps readers happy and engaged.

5) Paperback Interior Design

Your book interior designer will cast a professional eye over every section of your manuscript (foreword, dedication,  chapters, etc.) to create an attractive layout that enhances the reading experience.

6)  Book Cover Design

They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but everyone does! So, our book cover designers will make sure that yours looks good enough to display on anyone’s shelf.

7) Book Trailer Video

We will create a stunning one-minute trailer video of your book to generate enthusiasm among potential readers and inspire them to buy a copy.

8) Publishing & Distribution

We will publish the paperback and eBook versions of your book on Amazon, giving you an ISBN, author bio, and book description, so you’ll be a full-fledged author and available everywhere.

9) Verified Reviews

We will send your book to Amazon’s top reviewers, along with others who may be interested in its topic to help you get early reviews that create a buzz.

10) Book Marketing

We will execute a seven-day promo cycle to advertise your book on more than a dozen websites. We will also be shouting about it on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to help drive sales and generate interest.

11) Best Seller Rank

We will help you become a best-selling author with our book launch plan, ensuring that your book reaches the #1 position in at least one category on Amazon.

12) Press Release Distribution

We will feature your book in press releases to more than hundred of media sites, including the top-tier newswires (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CW, etc.) positioning you as the go-to expert in your field.

Aaand that’s it. You know can brag as much as you want. You are an author, and we appreciate that – you’re well above average.

How to Become a Published Author

How to Become a Published Author

No doubt.

There is how to’s for everything.

How to jump from planes. How to scuba-dive.

How to wash your car.

How to sew. How to read, write and prosper…

You can learn almost anything, nowadays. The internet is full of lessons and important tips and insights. No wonder why they called it The Information Age (also called Computer Age, Digital Age, or New Media Age). It’s a historic period of the 21st century characterized from the rapid shift from traditional industry that the Industrial Revolution brought through industrialization, to an economy based on information technology (the use of computers to store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data) – according to Wikipedia.

So how to become a published author in an Informational age, actually it’s opposite of rocket science. We may found that It’s easy. Read on why.

The easiest way to become a published author is by teaming with a Digital Agency to meet your needs. There are a couple of good ones on the internet, which can help you along your way starting from scratch and guiding you through the whole book process – to the bare end or after you publish. You don’t even have to know how to write, nor learn on the internet, and plus you keep all your royalties for yourself. Yes, that’s how we are rolling at The Books Factory.

eBook sales are ramping up since 2010 and almost every book on the planet is out there on the internet in this format. People are reading on their phones, tablets, laptops, and computers. Now, they are carrying a whole library with them, all the time in just one device.

The greatest thing about books being available online is their downward cost – there are no costs for storage, distribution, and physical materials so the sale is only on an informational basis and can be delivered instantly. That’s why thousands of eBooks are available for pennies and for the greater good that allows us as publishers to publish also for smaller audiences, and narrower niches. That’s why we too recommend and choose this route at The Books Factory. It’s win-win for everyone!

Should you self-publish or publish the traditional way?

You can always choose to self-publish too, but keep in mind that there are a lot of bad self-published eBooks that desperately need the helping hand of an editor to sum and clear them up. That’s why we believe you should consider a helping hand when it comes to publishing your book.

Should you choose to self-publish or go the traditional way?

If you are in doubt or wander around this question, you are not alone! Manny writers regardless of their skill level, career path or how established they are, struggle with this too.

Since 2000, times have dramatically changed and now many self-publishing authors accuse traditionally published authors of being short-sighted in their compliance to a “standard” system. But the truth is that there isn’t a single right answer to this question, it depends whether you choose the old traditional way or you want to be up to date with the New Media, and grasp its benefits.

Answering these 3 questions might help you decide:

  1. Do you expect to see your book in the bookstores across the country?

It’s almost impossible for a self-published author, to achieve wide-scale distribution. You may be the lucky one, and be able to get your book locally if you are well connected in your community but for the most part, self-published authors will sell on Amazon as an eBook format. That’s not bad at all because more than half of all the books sold in the United States are through Amazon. Combined with a Digital agency to cover marketing and promotion, it’s one of the most successful tactics you can choose to.

2) Do you want to hit the bestseller status and get media attention?

Whether you seek for the New York Times bestseller list or Amazon bestseller, you’ll need help from a traditional or digital publishing agency. It’s also very challenging to get any major media to pay attention to you as a self-published author.

3) Can your book easily reach your audience?

It’s senseless to partner with a traditional agency if your book’s audience is one that you can reach easily on your own. However, if you’re looking to increase your readership in some way or help you pivot – then a publisher can be of tremendous help.

Don’t use self-publishing as a way to land a traditional deal. Once you self-publish a book, it will be very difficult to garner interest for your book from a traditional publisher or an agent. Some digital publishes may offer you help, but it’s better to let them help you before you even decide to publish.

The success rate for self-publishing is not that different from the traditional. You may end up making more money in both cases. Self-published authors may find that marketing and promotion for their book are much tougher than the writing of their books. So are you committed to producing more work, and market it month after month, year after year?

You may be on your right path then.

So take action and see it for yourself. Go and try the traditional route first, get rejected, try to self-publish. Because it’s very very hard at first to go the other way around successfully. In the end, few authors end up as bestselling superstars. Some authors do very well. And the majority do not make a living from selling books. If you’re not an expert it’s better to ask for help from a Digital Publishing agency.
